Final blog

When you first told us that we were going to be doing a blog, I was kind of wondering how it was going to turn out. I had never done a blog before this class. I really liked the blog effect rather than writing a journal. I liked how we could look at others to see their point of view on things we did in class too.

Workshops

I really did not like what we did on Tuesday in class. I thought when you said we will be doing workshops you meant we would be working on fixing our own papers and asking questions if we needed help. I did not expect to be reading other people papers. I feel like peer reviews did not really help this time. A peer may tell someone one thing to do but then you tell us to do another. Peers do not really know what exactly is right when it comes to revising papers. They do not pay as close as attention as you do. You know what to look for and we do not.

Thanksgiving

I love thanksgiving! We usually go to my grandparents house but this year my uncle moved from Oklahoma to Rapid City so we went out there. We did not have everyone we usually do becuase of the weather being bad. The roads on the way there were really icy. There was a truck in front of us that fish tailed and then went into the ditch. It could have been a 7 car accident but all the cars managed to miss the truck which was good. It was scary. Then about 7 miles down the road there was a semi that was "jack-knifed" in the ditch. The speed limit was 75 we were driving 60 because it was so icy. We (me, my mom, my brother) finally made it to my uncles house. When we got there my grandparents were already there. It was around 4:30 our time and 3:30 there time when we arrived. We sat around and talked and played some card games. Then later we ate. The next morning was thanksgiving and my grandparents and uncle and mom got up early and started cooking then me and my brother slept in and didnt wake up until around 11 and we ate about 12:30. Then we just hung out and played some more cards. My family is really big into playing cards. We also looked through all the black friday ads so me, my mom, and grandma knew where we were going to go friday morning. Friday morning came and we got up at 3:30 so we could be at walmart at 4:00. Black friday is crazy but us 3 do it every year. We went to about 4 other stores after walmart. My uncle and grandpa went hunting during the day. We just had left overs all weekend. The drive home today was long and boring but the weather was good.

Outline

I liked how we did the outline I think it helped me but I also think it could have helped me more if we would have had that due before our 1st draft. I feel like I rushed though it just so I could get to my paper.

Thesis

Ambrose Bierces's "The Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge" reflects how people deny reality to protect themselves just as Farquhar denys himself being hung.

Reading Critically

This is the first time that I have read something and highlighted to find things that stuck out to me. I believe it is very time consuming but it helps out a lot and is worth the time. I don't think I have found a method that is quite right for me yet. But the more I read the more I will work with it and figure it out.

Women in the 1900s

The 20th century produced dramatic changes and opportunities for women. The events leading up to statehood brought to an official end at least the practice of polygamy, and the state constitution restored women's right to vote and guaranteed other equal rights. Laws passed in 1911 and 1913 set maximum hours and minimum wages for working women. Technology dramatically altered women's lives, especially in urban areas. Electric service, indoor plumbing, central heating, and the small power motor revolutionized homemaking. The growth of commercial laundries and expanding factory production of clothing, processed foods, and other household items relieved women of many tasks and created hundreds of jobs for them outside the home. Manufacturing, retail and wholesale trade, banking, and services grew rapidly in the early 20th century.   (http://historytogo.utah.gov/utah_chapters/statehood_and_the_progressive_era/alookatworkingwomenintheearly20thcentury.html)

My thoughts on this:
I think that this is great! I believe that women do have a right to vote and work for minimum wage just like guys. Guys and Girls are no different. I also think it is great for women to work outside there homes. There is no reason a women needs to be a home 24/7 working. I believe a man can do household work just like a women can. I mean women have the choice now of working at home if they want and I believe that is they way it should be. I am thankful for all the changes that were made in the 1900s because I would not want to live that way. Guys and girls should have equal rights!

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge: I really liked this story because I just kept thinking to myself, how can they do this to this guy? I also kept thinking about how he could survive making it through being hung, drowing and being shot at. This story kept me on my toes. :) The end also shocked me on how he was just imagining all of these things.

The Most Dangerous Game: I did not really like this story as much because I can not understand why someone would want to go hunting for humans. This story frigtened me a little bit. This story was a mystery to me.

But both stories kept me thinking the whole time while reading them

The one who walks away from Omelas

This story made me think about how strong of a person I really am. Could I be the one to walk away or would I stay to torture the kid even though I knew it was wrong? This story really shows that even though the place was like paradise the people would still the kid. They stayed and did this because they liked "paradise". I thought it was very disturbing because they did that. I feel like I would be one of the strong ones because I know that hurting a child would be bad so I would not stay there, even though being in "paradise" would be wonderful, but hurting a child is not worth it!

Research Paper

So when I first picked my topic about funding for USD sports I was excited to start. But when we had to bring a book to class I went to the library to find my book (of course) and I tried to search for it on my own on the computer but I couldnt find any so I went to the help desk. The lady there was very nice and willing to help in every possible way. She told me that there is not a book in the world bout unviersity funding for sports so I got a book just about school funding. I skimmed it and really couldnt find anything in it to use in my paper. So I started looking around on the library website for sources. I found a few but not enough for a reasearch paper. So I changed my topic to how standardized testing affects schools. When I was researching about it this weekend I really grew intrest in it. Research papers are very time consuming and get very boring at points. But I realized that if I do it in sections and get a topic that I am interested in, it is better.

Also I like the way you edited our papers the first time. I did not really like the computer one.

Class so far

I like class. I think I am learning a lot of different ways to write I like how we do the three drafts so we can get different inputs about our writing. I love blogging. I would rather do this than a journal. I also like the quizzes we do before class. I like all the extra credit you offer. I think you should do the powerpoints over the readings more because I think we understand the reading more. At least I do :) Visuals are great!

Death Penatly

I think I am going to write about the death penatly for our next paper. I noticed that when we did the activites in class it came up on my list more than once. Also I have very strong feelings about it. I am excited to write about this.

Topic

My topic was going to be about death penatly but then you said in class that you cant convert someone's opinion on that in an 8-11 pages. I changed my topic to funding for all college sports being the same.

Presentations

I thought the presentations were a good project that we had to do. It gave us a lot of different ways to help with our papers. I liked how most groups had handouts because now we have them to look back at if we ever have questions.

Class on Tuesday

Class on Tuesday was different without you. Ryan definatly does not have the same personality like you do. He is a lot quieter. We made it through everything. The peer review went well again for me. Also we had enough time at the end of class to get with our groups and try to figure out a time we could all meet so we could have the assignment done by class tomorrow. With the 3 other students in my group it was hard to try to figure out a time we could all meet between us having class, working, and athletic practices. We managed to get an hour in tonight.

Hollywood Blowhards

I am not really into politics. I think it is becuase I don't really have intrest and my mom is not really into it either. I can't believe that the those top notch people would be saying these quotes. I know Hollywood is turing into something crazy. People are going crazy in Hollywood and just say and do stuff for attention.

Peer Review

The girl that peer reviewed my paper did a reallly good job. She did way better then the ones I have had in the past. Usually I do not like peer reviews but I enjoyed it this time because I actually got help on it.

If I were to die tomorrow

If I were to die tomorrow I do not think the world would change as a whole but I think that there will be certain people in the world that it would have an impact on. I have not done anything really big with my life that has changed the world. There are people in my life that I have a wonderful relationship with. Like my mom. My mom is my best friend and I do not know what we would do without eachother. My dad would also have a hard time because I am his only girl. We do a lot of things together. My dad would not have his partner in crime with him. My brother may not admit to people that he would miss me but im pretty sure he does. I think that about him because he looks up to me in many different ways. I can tell that just by the way he acts and by the way he talks to me. He trys to act just like me. My friends would not be the people they are today without me. I feel like I have made an impact with there lives in good ways. And that is why they are still my friends today! I think the relationships you have with people is way bigger then if you try to make an impact in the world.

Boys vs. Girls

I think I would rather be a boy because of the fact that they do not have much drama in their lives. Most guys don't care what people think about them. They do not care how they act in public. Being a girl is so much harder then being a boy I think because being a girl involves make-up, actually doing hair in the morning, and DRAMA! Girls have so much drama becuase girls like to judge people before they get to know people. If most girls don't get their way they have a fit. But on the other hand I think girls are more sensative then guys. Girls can actually take time out of their day to listen to someone they care about when they are having a bad day. There is no way most guys will stop in the middle of a game on tv or hanging with the guys to listen to their girl or another friend to help them with their bad day. Im not trying to say that all guys are like this or all girls im just saying most.

University of Life

I like how in this story she mentions how people shouldnt say that "girls cant do this" or "girls shouldnt do that" because it is very true. Girls should be able to do whatever they want. If they have the desire to do something let them do it!

I can kinda relate to how at the end she says that her mom cried all the way back home from dropping her off at college. I can relate becuase my mom says she cried all the way back home too.

Me Talk Pretty One Day

I liked this story because it makes me glad that I have the teachers I do. It would suck to have a teacher like that because that teacher was rude to the students. The teacher shouldn't have said some of the things she said. That is not the way teachers are suppose to act towards students.

Me

Hey guys!
Im Tricia Watson and I am from Watertown SD. I am a very athletic girl. I am running track here on a scholarship and back home I was also a gymnast and played softball. I also went to Australia this summer for an international track meet. Australia is so beautiful. I loved it there. :)
